Chapter 16

AVERY

When Avery opened his eyes, Nicholas was gone. He sat up and looked around the empty room. The Alpha’s pleasant, musky scent still lingered, but that was the only sign he’d left that he had been there at all.

After showering and getting dressed, the omega headed downstairs to face his own humiliation. He still had a headache from crying the night before, and he wasn’t sure whether he should apologize to Nicholas or thank him for staying.

Avery couldn’t remember the last time he’d slept so well. He couldn’t ever remember feeling as safe as he had with Nicholas. Not just safe from the physical threat that had haunted him ever since his kidnapping, but safe to fall apart the way he had in the Alpha’s arms. Jared had never made him feel that way, even during the best of times. On the few occasions they had been together, when their busy schedules would allow it, Jared had made it clear that they were fulfilling a contractual obligation and nothing more. Every month that had passed without Avery getting pregnant was a fresh reminder that he had yet to prove his worth to the Alpha.

With Nicholas, it was different. All they’d done was cuddle, aside from a single kiss Avery was sure the Alpha viewed as a mistake, but he felt closer to Nicholas than he ever had to another. He told himself if that was all Nicholas ever wanted, it was okay. It was enough. Nicholas was enough for him, even though he couldn’t see a way for them to be together in any capacity that wouldn’t end in disaster.

“Avery!” Beverly called in a far more chipper tone than Avery had heard her use all week. “There’s a phone call for you.”

Avery’s heart tumbled in his chest. “Coming,” he called, following the sound of her voice into the living room. “Who is it?”

“It’s your father,” she said brightly, offering him the phone. “He says your phone isn’t working?”

“My carrier gets poor signal out here,” he said sheepishly, taking the handset from her. “Thanks.”

The omega left the room, and Avery braced himself. “Hi, daddy.”

“Daddy? I’m sorry, do I know you? Because my son has too much common sense to break off a contractual engagement with the soon-to-be Chairman of the Federation Council over the phone.”

Avery sighed. “I see Jared called you.”

“Yes, and in the very, very long list of reasons I’m disappointed in you, letting me hear the news from your fiancé is near the top.”

“I just assumed he wouldn’t leave me any time. I got off the phone with him on Monday, and given the amount of time it takes for your secretary to route your calls, I’m going to assume he called right after we got off the phone.”

The silence on the other end of the line told him he’d guessed right. “Are you out of your mind, Avery? Do you have any idea how hard this is going to be to undo?”

“Impossible, I’m sure. But I don’t plan on undoing it.
